The 14th annual pipes|drums New Year’s Honours
2015 Drummer of the Year
Steven McWhirter
His fourth time being named Drummer of the Year (2006, 2011, 2013), Steven McWhirter continues to set the new standard, both as Inveraray & District Leading-Drummer and as a soloist, winning his sixth World Solo Drumming title and his fifth in a row. At the pace he’s at, McWhirter could be a serious threat to Jim Kilpatrick’s record 16 World Solo wins. With Inveraray continuing its progression to an eventual World Pipe Band Championship, Steven McWhirter is solidifying his place at the top-tier of the greatest pipe band drummers in history.
Panellists’ comments:
“Another solo championship and continued success as the L-D of IDPB. Also, continued growth and success as a teacher at Dollar Academy, at summer camps and schools worldwide, and through his website.”
“Gotta be the best ‘all-rounder’ out there.”
“All-round great drummer. Often overshadowed by drummers in the news.”
Also considered (alphabetical order):
Stephen Creighton – the St. Laurence O’Toole leading-drummer brought his corps and his band to huge prominence in 2015, winning the World Pipe Band Drumming title and the RSPBA Drumming Champion of Champions award. “. . . for his outstanding success in leading the SLOT drum corps to its Champion of Champions title. In addition, Stephen continues to be successful as a solo competitor – finishing fifth at this year’s solo World Championships.”
Jim Kilpatrick – by far the drummer who was most newsworthy in 2015, Kilpatrick’s contribution to Shotts & Dykehead’s World Championship must be highlighted. Now likely finishing his competing career with the reformed Spirit of Scotland in 2016, Kilpatrick will continue to hold our attention and fascination. “Not the biggest impact in competition, but Shotts does not win without him. He by far made the most news and teaches all over the world. Deserved.” one panelist commented.
Eric Ward – at the helm of Greater Glasgow Police Scotland, the veteran leading-drummer ensured his band would be in the hunt with consistent performances, including the drumming win at two major championships. Said one panelist: “For bringing the drum corps back to the fore, winning the drumming at two majors.”
