PPBSO Confirms Cambridge Games Cancelled
The Pipers & Pipe Band Society of Ontario (PPBSO) has confirmed that the Cambridge Highland Games, once the home of the Canadian Championships, will not be held in 2001.
The games, which were started in the 1970s, had experienced financial difficulty for several years. The 2000 event was a stripped-down version in which only Grade 1 and 2 pipe band events were held. The event was once one of the best-attended on the Ontario circuit by both participants and spectators.
In 1999 the Cambridge Games suffered an embarrassing accident when an errant caber landed on a child in the crowd. It is not know whether the decline of the games and the incident are related.
The PPBSO was not notified of the decision until April 7 after several weeks of not having calls to event organizers returned.
