On the road with Pipes and Sticks on Route 66: Days 7 & 8
Day 8:
By Stuart Liddell
With the uncertainty of the situation with the van, we checked into the Double Tree Hotel for another night. Even though we were scheduled to travel to Gallup, New Mexico, it was a welcomed breather and a chance to catch up with laundry.
We hung about in the lobby waiting to go for lunch. Willie was away to arrange a meeting with the local news media. Angus and I entertained everyone with “Lochaber Gathering” on the piano.
The diner we went to was situated on Route 66 in an area called Nob Hill in Albuquerque. The diner featured iconic Route 66 memorabilia right down to the waitress’s attire. We had a lovely lunch and mud pie was the shake-of-the-day – a mixture of chocolate ice cream, caramel, coffee and biscuit. I don’t think I could work in a place like this; I’d be living on milkshakes every day.
