Matheson, MacDonald Win at Gairloch Contest
Gairloch, Scotland – September 29, 2001 – A new solo piping contest was held here today on the northwest coast of Scotland, set up to commemorate the life and works of Iain Dall Mackay, the great “Blind Piper of Gairloch.”
The event saw ten pipers take part, and included a recital by Gold Medallist Duncan MacGillivray and a discussion by piping historian Bridget MacKenzie.
Competitors had to submit two tunes from a list of Iain Dall MacKay compositions for the piobaireachd event. Both sections were judged by John D. Burgess, Invergordon, Scotland.
