Manawatu Scottish Wins Third Straight New Zealand Championship

Christchurch, New Zealand – March 7-8,2003 – The Manawatu Scottish Society Pipe Band of Palmerston North, New Zealand, took its third consecutive New Zealand Pipe Band Championship here in an event that saw a total of nine Australian bands travel to the competition.

The runner-up prize in Grade 1 went to the Nunawading Pipe Band of Victoria, Australia, with Christchurch’s Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band coming in third. Six bands competed in Grade 1. Two judges, Nat Russell of Victoria, Australia, and Malcolm MacKenzie, Glasgow, were brought in to help adjudicate the event. Grade 2 was won by Speights City of Dunedin, New Zealand.

The New Zealand Nationals are run over two days. Grades 3 and 4 were held on March 7, and grades 1and 2 on March 8.

Manawatu Scottish are reportedly planning to release a recording in 2003 and travel to Glasgow to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships.
