Mackay new Strathclyde Police pipe-major
Donald Mackay, a three-year member of the band, is the new Pipe-Major of the Strathclyde Police of Glasgow, according to an official statement from the band
Mackay replaces James Wark, who faces mandatory retirement from the police force after 2004.
Before joining the police as a constable, Mackay served with the The Highlanders for 11 years.
Under Wark’s three years as pipe-major, the band returned to the regular prize-list at RSPBA majors, and won the 2003 British Pipe Band Championship. Wark took over in September of 2001 from Ian Plunkett.
Gavin Walker, the band’s pipe-sergeant under Wark and also a police constable, was thought by many to be the leading candidate to be pipe-major.
