Donald MacLeod Memorial: Another McCallum Win

Stornoway, Lewis, Scotland – April 4, 2003 – Willie McCallum of Bearsden, Scotland, added to his stowed-out trophy room with a win at the Donald MacLeod Memorial Invitational Solo Piping Competition on this Outer Hebridean island.

McCallum won the Piobaireachd event and was second in the light music, while Alasdair Gillies of Pittsburgh took the March, Strathspey & Reel.

The event spotlights MacLeod and his compositions, with all competitors submitting both piobaireachd and light music by Lewis’s legendary native son.

A Hornpipe & Jig event was won by Alasdair Gillies playing “Arthur Gillies” and “The Shaggy Grey Buck.”

Overall winner was Willie McCallum, with Roddy MacLeod the runner-up.

Judges for both events were Iain MacFadyen, John Wilson, and Rona Lightfoot.
