(Updated) Silver Chanter goes to Roddy MacLeod

Dunvegan, Skye, Scotland – August 3, 2016 – Roddy MacLeod of Glasgow was the winner of the 2016 Silver Chanter, the annual invitational piobaireachd competition that honours tunes attributed to or associated with the MacCrimmon family of pipers. The contest is held at Dunvegan Castle, the seat of the MacLeod of MacLeod, chief of the Clan MacLeod, and the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland.

Roddy MacLeod was assigned “Lament for Patrick Og MacCrimmon” to play. It was his seventh win of the prize, following success in 1989, 1998, 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2009. No one has won the award more times since the event started in 1966.

Also competing were Callum Beaumont, Linlithgow, Scotland (“Lament for the Earl of Antrim”); Cameron Drummond, Edinburgh (“The Battle of Waternish”); Stuart Liddell, Inveraray, Scotland (“I Got a Kiss of the King’s Hand”); Angus MacColl, Benderloch, Scotland (“Lament for the Children”); and Iain Speirs, Edinburgh (“Lament for MacLeod of Colbeck”).

Iain MacFadyen was the judge while Malcolm McRae was the reader, following the score of the setting of the tune that each piper played.
