SFU makes cash injection to BC Highland Games

Not the Grade 1 pipe band, but the university that sponsors the band, Simon Fraser University is marking the fiftieth anniversary of the school by donating additional prize money to be awarded to the top solo piper and drummer at the 84th BC Highland Games & Scottish Festival in Coquitlam, British Columbia, on June 20th.

A total of $5,000 will be contributed by the university to the BC Highland Games in 2015with an additional $750 going to the aggregate Professional solo piping award, meaning a contestant who wins everything could buy everyone at least $1,200 in beer. SFU is also contributing $500 each to the solo snare and tenor drumming prizes.

The university already supports Highland dancing and heavy athletic events at the games.

SFU President Andrew Petter was named as Chieftain of the Day for the competition and will present some prizes.

“We are proud to support the BC Highland Games as we approach our 50th anniversary and look forward to this opportunity to share SFU’s Scottish heritage and extend our engagement with the local community,” Petter said.

The BC Highland Games are one of the Pacific Northwest’s biggest and longest-running competitions.
