The Grade 2 World’s Final: a video compilation

pipes|drums Magazine staked out a great spot to capture all twelve bands in the Grade 2 Final at the World Pipe Band Championships on August 17, 2013, at Glasgow Green. The march, strathspey & reel event saw the Buchan Peterson Pipe Band of Aberdeen, Scotland, take the title, after each finalist band finished in the top six in its qualifying heat earlier in the day.

Judges for the Final MSR were Harry Stevenson and William Garrett (piping); Ciaran Mordaunt (drumming); and Joe Noble (ensemble), and piping adjudicators’ rankings were often far apart, as in the case of the Cullen Pipe Band of Ireland receiving an eighth and a first, Lomond & Clyde getting a third and a ninth, and St. Thomas Alumni a first and a tenth.

Of note also are the sizes of the bands, ranging from more than 20 pipers to nine.

The final result and judge-rankings were:
1st Buchan Peterson (5,2,2,2)
2nd Lomond & Clyde (3,9,1,1)
3rd New York Metro (4,5,3,8)
4th Glasgow Skye Association (2,7,8,4)
5th St. Thomas Alumni (1,10,4,7)
6th Bleary & District (6,4,7,9)
7th Police Service of Northern Ireland (10,6,6,6)
8th Manorcunningham (9,8,9,3)
9th Cullen (8,1,10,10)
10th Mackenzie Caledonian (7,3,11,11)
11th University of Bedfordshire (11,12,5,5)
12th Scottish Fire & Rescue Services (12,11,12,12)

We hope that you enjoy reliving the well-contested Grade 2 Final at the 2013 World Pipe Band Championships.

  1. Great idea to feature these bands. Gives them a chance to step into the spotlight as it gives us a chance to check them out. Nice to see the “others” in the field when so much attention is on the grade ones. Well done!

  2. How can two piping judges that are 15-20ft apart come out with such differing opinions on placement? Come on RSPBA take a hard look at this and take action!
