Wellington players band together for earthquake relief concert

Several of the leading pipe bands of New Zealand’s North Island have quickly come together to stage a benefit concert in aid of the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. The show will take place on Saturday, March 5th, and feature pipe bands from the area, including the Auckland & District City of Wellington, Manawatu Scottish, Red Hackle, Paraparaumu and Scots College pipe bands.

The 100 Pipers Earthquake Appeal Concert will be held at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington at 7 pm. The New Zealand Pipe Band Championships had been scheduled to be held in Timaru in the country’s South Island on the same date. The organizers are joining with the Red Cross, with all proceeds from the concert going to the Relief Fund.

The Wellington City Council is assisting with the event, which has priced tickets at $15 each, or $40 for a family of two adults and two children. Tickets are available in advance from Ticketek, or at the door and donations to the Red Cross will be taken at the concert.

pipes|drums announced on February 26th that it is accepting donations, all of which will be forwarded to the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band organization, which was particularly hard-hit by the earthquake, losing two sets of drums and many artifacts when its historic 88-year-old practice hall was demolished.
