Lomond & Clyde to mark 10 with big Grade 1 contest

To celebrate the their tenth anniversary in 2010, Glasgow’s Grade 2 Lomond & Clyde Pipe Band plans to hold an invitation pipe band competition on March 20, 2010 in Glasgow. First-prize will be £2,500.

The indoor event will see eight Grade 1 bands in competition for the cash, which will be one of the largest prizes offered in the UK to a pipe band. By comparison, first-prize for the 2008 Grade 1 World Pipe Band Champion was £1,000

The Lomond & Clyde event will offer £1,500 to the competing band placing second.

According to Scott Smart, Vice-Chairman of the band, the competition will consist of two afternoon heats with an evening final comprising four bands.

“This event will provide an excellent pre-season opportunity for the bands to run their own sets of tunes,” said Band Chairman Fraser Sergeant. “For Lomond & Clyde it raises our public profile by running such a prestigious event and this anniversary celebrates the input and hard work of all members of the band, past and present.”

It is not known where in Glasgow the event will be held, but Radisson is listed as a sponsor. The inviting process is also not known. Smart said that ticket information is currently available at www.ticket-scotland.com.

Lomond & Clyde is run by Pipe-Major David Wotherspoon and Leading-Drummer Allan Craig, and in 2009 in Grade 2 has finished sixth at the Scottish Championships, sixth at the British, and fifth at the European.
