New drum corps for Bucksburn; Niven now L-D
The Grade 2 Bucksburn & District of Aberdeen, Scotland, has appointed Scott Niven as its new Leading-Drummer, replacing the departing long-time L-D David Brown. The band also revealed that it has made several additional changes to its drum section, with most members, including Niven, being taught from the beginning through the band.
Along with Brown, snare drummers Jade McDermid, Jo Lancaster, Lyndsey Milne and Stephen Moggach; tenor-drummer Keith Mann; and bass-drummer Graham Gauld have also departed
The band appears to have a drum corps, however, as Niven has brought with him snare-drummers Sinead Bruce, Lachlan Gibb, Chris Henderson and former-member Martin Gibb. Incumbent Tenors-drummers Sophie Gibb and Chris George are joined by newcomers Catherine Ellis and Gillian Wright, and Simon Davidson becomes the new bass-drummer.
David Brown will apparently dedicate more attention to his work as an RSPBA adjudicator.
“What makes the transition special for our band is the fact that all [the members of] the new drum corps have been taught, tutored and nurtured through our own band feeder system,” said band President Gus MacAskill. “These guys are exceptional already – I can’t wait to see the future.”
Bucksburn competed at the Scottish Championships on May 16th, placing fourteenth in Grade 2.
The Bucksburn pipe band has always had a great reputation for it’s high standards and are also a very highly respected band around the world. I recall this band at one time being in grade one over thirty years ago and unlike a lot of it’s competitors, they are survivors and I applaud them for continuing to maintain a high standard. Best of luck!
I was a member of this band when we were Grade one, it was an honour to be to be part of such a great band, I understand individuals leaving for various reasons, but a complete Drum core does not show a great deal of loyalty, was it not this attitude with Drummers that caused the Grade one Clan Gregor to disband. I wish the band and the current Drummers all the best for the future
Well Done Scott! That is fantastic news and I’m sure the corps will go from strength to strength with you as LD. Good Luck mate.
Well done to bucksburn for building on some great foundations set by David Brown. Scott and the new Drum corps have a great future ahead of them because of this. David was a great servant to Bucksburn and set some very high standards. Good luck to Scott and the Band.
Cromar its pipe bands – people move on for all types of reason. Im sure Clan Gregors drum corps had their reasons. Anyway that has nothing to do with this article. Good luck Scott. Would be great to see the North East have a grade 1 band again!
All the best to you and the band Niv!
Fantastic !
Hi folks, Thanks to all for the good wishes. I’m really excited about the future of the band, there are some very very talented young drummers coming through the ranks, who will hopefully play a big part in keeping the band as successful as it has been. It will be a big task to meet the standards set by David and his corps over the last 20 years, but we intend to give it our best shot! Thanks again, Scott
