Birrell takes International Connection drumming
Christchurch, New Zealand – February 27, 2009 – Scott Birrell of Boghall & Bathgate Caledonia was the winner of the solo event at the first International Connection Drumming Competition held the day before the New Zealand National Pipe Band Championships. The contest saw a diverse array of world-class pipe band snare drummers take part. More than 200 spectators turned out for the event.

Auckland & District and Hamilton Caledonian also competing in the drum corps contest, and Alexis Ferguson, Elliot Gardiner, Fraser MacKensie, Jamie McEwan and Cameron Wilson took part in the solo event.

It was a great event. The crowd spilled out of ‘The Bog’ (Pub) into the mall on a warm evening, pints and all. It was a privilege to see so many top class players in one place in the southern hemisphere, accompanied by some sensational piping as well. I believe James Laughlin – who was the driving force behind organising the event – was behind the judging.
