Dookinella Pipe Band escapes burning bus
The members of the Memorial Pipe Band Dookinella today narrowly escaped from their bus before it burst into flames en route to Ireland’s Shannon Airport on their trip to the Irish Cultural Festival in Cleveland, Ohio.
The band, from Achill Island in County Mayo, discovered that its coach was on fire in the town of Newport, Ireland, and managed to evacuate the vehicle before it was engulfed in flames. There were no injuries, but some of the band’s instruments and luggage were destroyed.
Most of the band members have reportedly continued on their journey, with several emergency passports being issued for a later flight.
It took fire fighters 30 minutes to get the fire under control, and several cars on the scene were also damaged.
The Island of Achill is “twinned” with the city of Cleveland.
