Strathclyde Police Pipe Band announces new Junior Piping Competition

After months of planning, the first Strathclyde Police Pipe Band Junior Piping Competition will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2007, at Smithycroft School, in Glasgow. The event is being put together in partnership with the Glasgow City Council.

The event is open to all pipers younger than 18 and no entry fee is required to compete. The contest will reportedly be judged by many of Scotland’s most senior solo adjudicators.

“[The Strathclyde Police Pipe Band Junior Piping Competition] is the brain-child of our bass-drummer Alan McGeachie,” said Pipe-Major Donald Mackay. “I have always wanted to use the band to put something back into the youth piping and drumming within our force area and at the moment this is the best option for us. A lot of Grade 1 bands have now started or are supporting youth bands, but we felt we had to do something different.”

Mackay added that there will “terrific” prizes, and if the event is successful the band hopes to add drumming competitions in the future.
