Eleventh annual George Sherriff Memorial Amateur Invitational Saturday
For the first time in the event’s eleven-year history, a top amateur piper from Scotland will be competing at the annual George Sherriff Memorial Amateur Invitational Solo Piping Competition.
Ashleigh Bell of Muir of Ord, Scotland, who was the overall winner at the Scottish Junior Championships in October will make the trip to Hamilton, Ontario, to compete at the event on November 18 against nine of North America’s most successful amateur competitors from 2006.
Three events comprise the overall competition: 6/8 Marches (starting at 10 am); Piobaireachd (1:30 pm); and a March, Strathspey & Reel (7:30 pm).
Competitors at this year’s Sherriff:
- Stuart Aumonier, Oakville, Ontario
- Micah Babinski, Mercer Island, Washington
- Robbie Beaton, Scotia, New York
- Ashleigh Bell
- Gordon Conn, Calgary
- Kylie MacHattie, Toronto
- Ben McClamrock, Baltimore
- Will Nichols, Blaine, Washington
- Kegan Sheehan, Glens Falls, New York
- Nick van Ouwerkerk, Summerside, Prince Edward Island
The Lombard Insurance Company has made it possible for Bell to compete at the competition, and a long list of sponsors – including pipes|drums – have donated to the event. The contest is organized by Bob Worrall and a team of volunteers, with additional support from the Pipers & Pipe Band Society of Ontario.
Judges for the competition are Chris Armstrong, Bathgate, Scotland; John Cairns, London, Ontario; and Paula Glendinning, Ashton, Maryland. Ken Eller will serve as master of ceremonies for the day.
Stay tuned to pipes|drums for results from the George Sherriff Memorial as they become available.
