Continued rebuilding at Niagara Police

October 6, 2006

The Grade 2 Niagara police Pipe Band of St. Catharines, Ontario, whose strength was in doubt less than two years ago, continues its rebuilding and has revealed that the band will debut a new tartan designed specifically for the band in 2007.

Band Business Manager Peter MacKenzie reports that eight new members have joined the band since the end of the 2006 season.

The organization’s youth band has also accepted seven new members since the end of August, and expects to make the competition field in 2007.

“The band has found renewed energy these past few months with stable leadership and an influx of talent,” MacKenzie says. “Our youth band project is in response to a variety of requests that we have received to allow younger players to learn, grow, compete and enjoy the music without the burden of winning as the only objective. I’ve seen far too many young people burn-out and stop playing simply to avoid the contest result.”

The new “Niagara” tartan is being designed in conjunction with a leading Scottish tartan maker in conjunction with the band’s 30th anniversary.

Niagara Regional Police have seen three pipe-majors in the last four years, with Dave Goodall currently running the Grade 2 band.
