Currie resigns as Glasgow Pipes & Drums P-M

Cameron Currie has resigned as Pipe-Major of the Glasgow Pipes & Drums, the Scottish Grade 1 band whose short history has been marked by substantial leadership and personnel changes.

“Due to personal reasons I have resigned as Pipe-Major of Glasgow Pipes & Drums,” Currie said. “Due to lack of sponsorship and lack of commitment from certain members of the band, I felt that I could no longer go on as Pipe-Major and maintain the standard required for Grade 1.”

There were no immediate reports of who has or would be taking over the band, which was started in 2004 from scratch after the band’s founding Pipe-Major, Don Bradford, departed the David Urquhart Travel Pipe Band. Glasgow Pipes & Drums was one of few bands to start officially in the top grade with RSPBA approval.

Currie continued, “I would like to express my thanks to [Leading-Drummer] Gary Corkin and his corps for the support over the last two seasons, and also to Colin MacKenzie for his efforts to build a new corps for the band.”

He went on to thank Pipe-Sergeant Iain MacPherson for his support.

In October 2005 the entire Glasgow Pipes & Drums drum section quit, and a number of pipers left to join, among other bands, David Urquhart Travel, a band that is still searching for a Pipe-Major after Chris Armstrong left to take over the ScottishPower Pipe Band.

Currie’s resignation comes with less than two months until the beginning of the 2006 Scottish pipe band season, which begins on May 7 with the Gourock Highland Games. Glasgow Pipes & Drums finished twentieth overall in Grade 1 at the 2005 World Pipe Band Championships.
