Stuart Cassells hits the pop bigtime

The Highland piper Stuart Cassells of Glasgow will be featured on two major recordings later this month, catapulting the winner of the 2005 BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year award to the heights of pop stardom.

Cassells plays on a track called “Do The Hippogriff” for the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which will be released this month. He plays with The Weird Sisters, a group that includes Jarvis Cocker and Phil Selway and Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.

Cassells was also recently flown to London to record a track with the retro-glam-rock band, The Darkness, for their anticipated second CD, which will be released on November 28.

Cassells is the first graduate of the piping degree at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and is working on his own first CD to be released later this year.
