‘Back to BASSics’ workshop planned for August 8 in Glasgow

A day-long workshop for bass- and tenor-drummers will take place on August 8 at Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow. “Back to BASSics” is the brain-child of tenor drummer Stevie McQuillan and will be managed by tenordrummer.com and sponsored by McCallum Bagpipes of Kilmarnock, Scotland.

The event has been in development for two years, is open to all and will feature instruction from Trevor Buckley, Mike Cole, Scott Currie, Tyler Fry, Stephen Kilbride, John McFetridge and McQuillan. Organizers hope to make Back to BASSics annual.

The workshop is a new addition to the Piping Live Festival.

“Back to BASSics has been a long time coming and, thanks to Stevie’s ambitions, I’m certain that it will present the sort of high standard organized instruction that has been familiar to North America for decades and sadly missing in Scotland for just as long,” said Scott Currie of tenordrummer.com. “I know from recent teaching experiences both at home and abroad that Scotland is ready for this sort of event and what better a time could there be than World’s week to bring together a truly international group of instructors and students?”

Planned activities during the workshop include a bass-section master class with invited speakers and a “come and play” performance accompanied by piper Lorne Cousin and Stevie Kilbride, who both participated in Madonna’s Re-invention world tour.

The workshop costs £35 per person and includes lunch and a T-shirt.
