Black Raven band puts four generations on stage

The Black Raven Pipe Band of Lusk, County Dublin, Ireland, performed what is likely a first for the piping world when four generations of pipers from one family played on stage at the band’s sold-out concert at the town’s local school hall on March 5.

The highlight of the show, entitled “Ravens Rock,” was when four generations of pipers from the Russell family played on stage. Eighty-seven-year-old Jimmy Russell; his two sons, Michael and Christy; Michael’s son, Paul; Christy’s son, Christopher; and Paul’s daughter, Ciara, all played together, marking the first known four-generation public piping performance. Paul Russell is the Pipe-Major of the band.

Black Raven’s concert lasted close to three hours, and featured other musicians and dancers.
