Todd Challenge-Recital goes to MacColl

Glasgow – August 12, 2004 – Angus MacColl of Benderloch, Scotland, was the winner of the Todd’s Bar Challenge-Recital at Strathclyde University, an event that played to a packed house and described by organizers as “the best yet.”

MacColl won against Bruce Gandy, Halifax, Nova Scotia; Jack Lee, Surrey, British Columbia; and Stuart Liddell, Inveraray, Scotland.

Liddell filled in at the last minute after Gordon Duncan of Pitlochry, Scotland, had to cancel after roads from northern Scotland were blocked because of mudslides due to the near-nonstop rain that Scotland has had since Sunday.

“All the players were brilliant,” said event organizer Willie McCallum, one of the world’s best competitive pipers and an accountant at Strathclyde University. “It’s great that an event like this has grown in popularity and just shows the many performance formats that piping can take.”

The event was part of Glasgow’s Piping Hot Festival.
