LA Scots best Prince Charles at Queen Mary
Long Beach, California – February 14-15, 2004 – The Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band won both Saturday and Sunday contests against San Francisco’s Prince Charles at the annual Queen Mary Scottish Festival. The event marked the first Grade 1 band contest of 2004.
The competition also was the first for LA Scots’ new leading drummer, Andrew Hoinacki. His corps finished first in drumming in the Saturday Medley event, and second in the Sunday March, Strathspey & Reel.
The Queen Mary Festival takes place on and around the famous ocean liner, permanently docked as a floating hotel in Long Beach harbour. The event is considered to have one of the grandest and most extraordinary venues in the world.
The Queen Mary competition also features a popular Kitchenpiping event, which is held in one of the ship’s many ballrooms. The competition is an “anything goes” format. The 2004 winner was Adrian Melvin, who included LA Scots’ bass drummer Steve Foley as Elvis Presley.
