Glengarry Invitational Extravaganza cancelled

The first annual “Glengarry Invitational Piping Extravaganza,” announced in November 2003 by the Glengarry Pipe Band, has been postponed due to lack of entries from the twenty invited competitors.

The band hopes to reschedule the event for, potentially, late autumn of 2004.

The contest was to offer a total purse of $3500, making it the richest total prize money in North America. The event stressed innovation by asking competitors to play “ten minutes of anything you can dream up,” with a bagpipe being one of the instruments played.

“We’ve had to cancel the competition due to lack of entries,” said organizer Colin Clansey, Pipe-Major of the Grade 2 Glengarry Pipe Band. “It would seem prize money is not the major
attraction for potential competitors, and perhaps the date is more important. In any case, the competition will be postponed until a later date, probably late fall, depending on competitor interest.”

Clansey went on to say that the band felt that, with only four or five competitors, the event would not produce the high-profile interest for which they were hoping.

Scott MacAulay, director of the College of Piping & Celtic Performing Arts in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, was to have judged the event, which was also to include an MSR.
