Barry Ewen Recovering From Stroke

Barry Ewen, the popular and accomplished Pipe-Major of the Windsor Police Pipe Band, is recovering from a stroke suffered on the morning of Saturday, June 7.

Ewen, originally from Glasgow, Scotland, has led several top bands, including the Grade 1 Scotia Legion from Nova Scotia in the 1980s. After moving to the Toronto area, he was an original member of the 78th Fraser Highlanders, and played on that band’s first two recordings.

With the Windsor Police, Ewen has taken the band to the top of Grade 2. The band was the 2002 winner of the PPBSO Champion Supreme award in Grade 2, and finished fifth at the World Pipe Band Championships last year.

Ewen’s wife, Becky, and his two children, Austin and Kendra, are reportedly excited about his progress in the last 24 hours.

Interim Pipe-Major for Windsor Police will be Pipe-Sergeant James Stewart, who will take the band until Barry Ewen’s return. The band’s first contest will be the Fort Erie games in Fort Erie, Ontario, on June 21.
