Greg Wilson Wins Silver Chanter

Dunvegan, Skye, Scotland – August 7, 2002 – Greg Wilson of New Zealand won his third consecutive Silver Chanter here at the former MacCrimmon stomping grounds of Dunvegan Castle.

Wilson was assigned “Lament for MacSwan of Roaig” to play for judge Iain Morrison of Lewis who filled in for an indisposed John McAskill.

Also invited to the contest were Stuart Shedden, Glasgow; Duncan MacGillivray, Tain; Roddy Macleod, Glasgow; and Jack Lee, British Columbia.

The event calls for five pipers to play a single piobaireachd attributed to or associated with the MacCrimmon piping family of Skye.

Greg Wilson Wins Silver Chanter

Dunvegan, Scotland – August 8, 2001 – Greg Wilson of Falkirk, Scotland, was awarded the coveted Silver Chanter for piobaireachd playing at the annual competition at Dunvegan Castle, Skye. Wilson also won the Clasp to the Dunvegan Medal at Portree, Skye, the previous day.

It was the second straight year that Wilson has garnered the event, which showcases piobaireachds composed by the MacCrimmons. Wilson’s tune was “Lament for MacSwan of Roaig.”

Also playing at the Silver Chanter invitational, which was judged by Donald MacPherson, were Alasdair Gillies, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Duncan MacGillivray, Nigg, Scotland; Willie McCallum, Bearsden, Scotland; and Bill Livingstone, Whitby, Ontario.

Greg Wilson is originally from New Zealand, and immigrated to Scotland in the mid-1990s.

Duncan MacGillivray won the Dunvegan Medal on August 8. Dr. Angus MacDonald of Skye and Willie McCallum were second and third in the Clasp contest.
