Peel Police Pipe Band Takes Summer Hiatus

The Peel Regional Police Pipe Band of Brampton, Ontario, has announced that it will take a break until the fall, deciding not to attempt to compete over the 2001 season. The inability to field a full drum section was cited as the main reason.

“Peel Police has not disbanded but we are not competing this summer,” said Pipe Major John Elliott. “The plan is to try and get something in place and regroup in the late summer or early fall. We are all quite disappointed that things turned out this way, however the police force is still behind the band 100% and hopes that we will be able to retool and return to the competition scene in 2002.”

Peel Police has been a contending Grade 1 band for the last decade, rising from Grade 2 in the early 1990s. The band has lately undergone leadership and personnel changes. Michael Grey, who took over as Pipe Major in 1996, departed after the 1999 season with John Elliott reclaiming the post.

In September, Drew Duthart took over as lead drummer. In the 2000 season Peel Police won several Ontario contests, including two PPBSO Champion Supreme events.

It is believed that John Elliott will be a frequent adjudicator this summer.
